In 1955 he joined the US Air Force as a linguist and received orders to the Army Language School in Monterrey, CA, providing him his first opportunity to leave Texas and enjoy a relatively cool West coast climate as well as a “real library” before serving tours in Korea and Japan.Īfter separating from the Air Force in 1958, he attended the University of Texas on the GI Bill and received both his Bachelor and Master’s degrees between 1959-1962. A lifelong lover of music, Bill gravitated to high school marching band, received all-district honors and was elected band president before graduating from Cross Plains High School in 1954 (later in life he became an addict of the 70’s variety show “Hee-Haw” due to his country music roots and the humor/talent of Buck Owens and Roy Clark). His early years were spent in rural farm life and in work as a roustabout in the surrounding oil fields.
